once under Byzantine Empire and Ottoman Empire rule. Its original name was
Athinai.
The Acropolis was a
popular place during the third millennium BC.
Alexander the Great
made Athens one of his pursuits. Other powerful men associated with Athens were
Solon, Peisistratus, Hippias and Hipparchus in addition to Pericles,
Cleisthenes, Miltiades and Themistocles.
Other famous
Athenians include Alcibiades, Demosthenes, Socrates and Xenophon.
Athens was part of
the Battle of Marathon, the Battle of Salamis, the Peloponessian War and the
Battle of Chaeronea.
